I’ve had time to read a few books in the past several months in spite of all the effort I’ve been putting in trying to develop a new church website for our Norway UU church using Joomla. OK, while I’m at it, why not mention loose bowels? I seem to have not diarrhea exactly but a pronounced looseness bowelwise and also perpetual sleep problems, not unrelated perhaps. Good God! I didn’t intend to get off on this subject!

A few weeks back I finished “My Stroke of Insight” by Jill Bolte Taylor, Ph.D., a neuroscientist. Her stroke deactivated a significant part of her left brain making it possible for her to function only through her right brain. The experience of this was what was amazing to her, and to the reader as well, I’m sure. The world, the universe, becomes something totally different. A feeling of oneness with the world and remarkable insight, a certain kind of spirituality where there exists no pressure to do anything, just to exist in the lap of the profoundest of feelings of wonder and, yes, joy. Of course, this was dangerous for her as the bleeding in her left brain was not stopping. With great effort she managed to save herself.

So, the mind has resources and perceptual abilities we never imagined.

Speaking of mind, I’m now working my way through “Absence of Mind: The Dispelling of Inwardness from the Modern Myth of the Self” by Marilynne Robinson. She really takes on the Richard Dawkinses of the world! She’s saying that there is a place for subjectivity and indeed religion, although so far she hasn’t said much about the latter. Some of it is hard for me to follow, but other parts ring bells. She goes after memes in a big way and tries to show how memes theory contradicts gene theories. I haven’t read the rejoinders by the rationalists yet, but I’m sure they’re tearing into her unmercifully because she really goes after them in this book.

Incidentally, Jon Stewart even gave her a favorable interview recently.

This quote from her has been highlighted by several reviewers: “Our religious traditions give us as the name of God two deeply mysterious words, one deeply mysterious utterance: I AM.” In other words, why the Hell am I here, who am I, why is anything here, and what does it all mean?

OK, that’s it for now.

Feb. 4th

This is the day back in 1965 that my father died. He had his heart attack while bowling , 3rd ball thrown I think. That was 45 years ago. Kate was about minus one month at the time.

The stock market tanked today. About time for a correction. But it was a surprise. I didn’t find out until I got home around 2pm. Went out snow shoeing anyway. Not much I can do about market, and I’m not ready to sell yet. I checked the corner of Kate’s barn where I thought the grey fox might have climbed, but couldn’t see claw marks.

I had my fasting lipid panel blood tests this morning. Fasted from last evening except for black coffee. All done by 8:30am. Had nice breakfast at cafeteria in the Stephens Memorial Hospital. Then I worked at church office. Got a lot done, various things. Then went back to that cafeteria. Had good chat with some people.

Dropped off copy of Board minutes at bank for Jessica LeConte. She was out so I didn’t get the forms. Then left Norway and stopped at Hannaford in Bridgton. Surprised Cynthia with scallops and thin sliced chicken plus more salad materials.

Watched Jon Stewart and part of Stephen Colbert tonight. Both good. Had watched Nightly Business Report first. Oh, btw, I got results back from lipid tests and my cholesterals are great! High on the good, low on the bad. And my INR is between 2 and 3 so I don’t need another “pro-time” test for a month.

Over and out.

When it’s party time in the seaside emirate of Dubai, which Jon Stewart once called ‘what happens when Saudi Arabia and Las Vegas have a baby’, it’s REALLY party time! Here’s the blast off video of the $20 million fireworks display at the opening of the new Atlantis resort on Dubai’s Palm Island. Toward the end of the video you get to see Priyanka Chopra as ‘Goddess of Atlantis’ as she calls the partying to begin. Over the top!

Brian Donohue posts a video, Barack On Target, which shows Barack Obama’s speech yesterday in which he fights back with words like the following: I don’t care what they say about me but I love this country too much to let them take over another election with lies and phony outrage and Swift-boat politics. Enough is enough!

In another post of Brian’s, John “I’m Coming in My Depends” McCain, he provides a link to a great sequence from the Daily Show in which Jon Stuart really rips into McCain’s performances at the Republican National Convention and elsewhere. Well worth watching!

Samantha Bee, that deliciously over-the-top comedian correspondent for Jon Stewart on the Daily Show, tells it like it is: “As a proud vagina American myself, I’ll be voting for McCain in November…”. Why? Because the woman Sarah Palin is his running mate of course! Hilarious!

NOTE: The video I previously had here is “no longer available”, so, I had to replace it with a slightly longer one of a little over 4 minutes run time.
