Cataract Removal

OK, today is the day Dr. Cassidy removes the cataract from my right eye. We’ll be heading down to Portland to the Eyecare Medical Group around Noon.

Kate is gonna drive and zMommy will be coming along. I’m told the whole procedure will take an hour and a half. But this is the whole time I’ll be there; the actual “procedure” or removal will take about ten minutes.

I’ve been taking eye drops the last couple days, three times a day. That’s Vigamox and Nevanac. The former is an antibiotic, the latter for pain reduction. Of course, I’m not sure how well I got the drops into my eye. Guess it doesn’t matter as long as some of it goes in.

It’s now approaching 11am. Pretty soon I’ll put on a short sleeved shirt with open collar, as they request, and take the Cyclopentolate. One drop of that. I think that’s to widen the pupil. It’s the reason I can’t drive to the surgery. Also I take the Nevanac again, three times, and will have to stop on the way down so I can insert a drop.

Alright, I guess that covers it. Perhaps I can update this post when I come back, assuming I at least have one eye (the left one) to look out of.
Yup, I’ve got one good eye now, the left one. Here it is 5:25pm and my right eye is blurry as hell. But that’s to be expected I’m told. I’ll be seeing Dr. Cassidy again in the morning (9:30am) for his further inspection and instructions for the future.

The whole procedure today was fairly painless. The only pesty thing was the inserting of the needle for the I-V in my hand. But whatever medication he gave me was definitely appreciated by me. I was quite relaxed during the whole time that Dr. Cassidy was operating, about ten minutes I guess.

Kate drove well all the way down and back. She said her pinched nerve in her neck was better. We stopped at Gorham on the way back and picked up some groceries, including Hake for supper. Over and out.

My Dad had that done (many years ago now!) and he was pleased with the result. Sounds as if yours has gone well, too. All the best!

Good job, 1e! Glad to hear everything went well.

Hey, thanks very much for your comments, Dragonstar, Aileni, and 2e. Thanks for the good wishes, Dragonstar aka Mererid. Sounds like your Dad may have been younger than me when he had his cataracts removed. As I understand it the process has gotten much safer and easier in recent years so I’m lucky I guess to be essentially 81 (as of Jan. 12) when I’m having mine removed. My poor mother had an awful time back in the early 1950’s when she had hers removed. And thanks Aileni for seconding Mererid’s wish for “All the Best” for me. And you too, 2e, thanks for your “Good job, 1e”. For anyone curious about the 2e and 1e interplay here, it’s just that we worked in the same computer company once and while she was the boss I was the older and we went by age. The “e” simply stands for “emeritus” because we’re both retired (although actually not emerita in any strict sense).

Thanks for explaining that Dad! I didn’t even know what “emeritus” means!
(Yesterday, you could even spell “engineer” and today you is one!)

glad everything worked out, seev. I have a few questions
    1. is zMommy Mrs Seavey? Let’s hope so, but that’s a little Reganesque.
    2. Is Dr Cassidy’s first initial H? For Hopalong? Boy, I bet he’s never heard that one.
I guess I had fewer questions than I thought.
Anyway, I’m glad everything is ok.
Oh, do you have a patch? If so, are you practicing your Pirate Talk? Arrrgh.

Hey, thanks for the comment, Tom.

    1. Yes, zMommy is Mrs Seavey. But it’s not Reganesque because it derives from the word “the” pronounced in German language fashion, i.e. zee, and that doesn’t mean anymore that it’s Hitleresque. In WW2 days, yes.

    2. Well, if Dr. Bruce Cassidy’s first name were Hopalong, my eyeballs would be floating in the gutter by now. Sure glad his first name is Bruce.

In the old days, like when my mother had her cataracts removed in god only knows when, they had the obligatory patches over the eyes. That might have been fun for me, actually. Pirate talk: For I am the Pirate King! Arrrrrgh.

    Hi Mardé,

I hoping that everything is going well for you since retruning for sugery. How’s your eye ?
Wishing you a continuing improvement. It’s quite a basic proceedure now, and quick, also.

Keep in getting stronger and take care.

    Hi Barbara,

Thanks for your nice message and wishes. I feel my eye is like new but we’ll see today when I get it tested at the Eyecare Medical Group. Also today, I get a “pre-op” on my left eye cataract. So, maybe in a couple months I’ll be seeing like an old seeing-eye dog? hahahahaha Just kidding. Couldn’t resist saying that. Thanks again, Barbara, and the best of luck to you in whatever you do!
