Today at Church

Hey, we had a good day in church today. I always get turned on there. It starts slow. Very few people. You wonder if anyone will show up. We had a full complement of people for the choir. Four women in the front row. Three men and one woman in the back row. This let us do a four part round. It was a little shaky but we got silent clapping from Becky. For introit we did a Jubilate Deo. Great fun to hit that. I enjoyed singing it.

Mind you this is a UU church with Universalist leaning. We’ve added about six or seven people this year. I think there were close to forty people in attendance today, counting the choir. We’re all very informal. Lots of candles lit. I lit one for son Christopher, saying today would have been his 52nd birthday.

There’s a lot more I could say. I could get into the personalities. People are all friendly and enjoy one another during coffee hour, before church, and even during. There were about ten people at the social concerns meeting during coffee hour. I didn’t attend — being treasurer is enough — and chatted with various people.

I’ve decided to learn “One More Circle” by Peter Mayer, arr. Jim Scott, for the Open Mic this Friday. It’ll be the seventh anniversary. Heather started it the end of January 2002. See an earlier post on the fourth anniversary for background. It’s amazing how time flies.

    It’s nice to remember him again.

    I went back to re-read the post from the 4th anniversary open mic. That is a fun read. Their sure are some fantastic characters up here in this part of Maine. Good peeps.

    Sounds like the choir really shook the church rafters yesterday.
    Must be the bitter cold that kick-starts your spirits.

    Hey, thanks Kate! Yup, the bitter cold kicked started our spirits and got us off the streets. As Christopher might say, “At least we have heads.”

    You get turned on at church? What kind of a place is it, anyway? Oh, right. The UUs. Aren’t they just a bunch of atheist liberals? Heh.

    This open mic sounds like a good deal. That’s one thing I’ll say for UU churches – they usually have a good coffeehouse going.

    So, thou art a singer? You shall be singing a solo? Will you be singing a cappella or will thou have an accompanist?

    Oh, c’mon Minds, you don’t have to use archaic biblical language! We UU’s don’t bother with the “thou”s, ya know. You ought to try one of the UU churches sometime. We are pretty free spirits! Just like atheist liberals?

    Actually I had already asked the choir director and open mic leader, Heather, to play for me, and she agreed provided I would come early and practice. But now other choir members have emailed me saying they want to do this song. (It seems that church member, Becky, a fan of the choir, had asked for it.) Oh well, I don’t always have to hog the glory I suppose.
