Serious Stuff

Here’s a serious interview on the Israel-Syria negotiations. Imad Moustapha, Syria’s ambassador to the US tells Al Jazeera how much progress has been made in talks with Israel over the Golan Heights. Thanks to Juan Cole for this. See the big Al Jazeera symbol. Not your “Main Stream Media”.

As someone in her 20s, I’ve always seen the Middle East in war. I hear of negotiation, I hear of peace period, I hear of war… it never seems to end. How sad.

That’s right, it’s sad, the Arab-Israeli conflict has been going on for decades now. Outside observers may find it difficult to empathize, but if we were a part of it, we would certainly grasp the tragedy. It staggers the imagination, if we try to think about it. Easiest not to.

Zhu – your comment brings to mind Orwell’s 1984, where the slogan of the fictional Oceania is “War Is Peace”, meaning that as long as war is a constant, things remain “stable” (status quo), and the “proles” (or us poor working stiffs) just busy themselves with TV and lottery tickets and ball games, everything is A-OK. The war machine drudges on, for economic and ideological and, really, STUPID reasons. It IS sad. What can be done? “Easiest not to” think about it – that’s exactly what the powers-that-be are banking on – our complacence and acceptance that this is how life is.

Well, I gotta admit you’re right, Minds. And those that do think about it are castigated as anti-Israel and/or anti-Semites. I’m thinking specifically of the critique by Mearsheimer and Walt, The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy. So, the powers that be, including the USA and Israel, and yes, many in the Palestinian camp, go right on perpetuating the status quo: Israeli settlements keep expanding and bombs keep coming from Hamas. The working people in Isreal and Palestine, especially the latter, keep on suffering. Certainly most of the Palestinians are not complacent and even many Israelis, but what can they do? Get shot or tortured?

Here in this country, there’s much ignorance of the real situation over there, thanks largely to our MSM which is encouraged and controlled to large extent by the powers-that-be, the military industrial complex and the Bush administration. As you say, Minds, our ignorance is what they bank on, and so the struggle goes on.

And once again – to belabor the point – religion is at the core of all of this nonsense. When Frank Zappa said “The geeks over there don’t believe in the book we’ve got over here”, he pretty much summed up the root cause of all this struggle and war and violence that we’re seeing all over the world. But specifically, about the Israeli/Palestine conflict – arguing about the ownership of a bunch of sand, that some supposedly divinely written book (most likely penned by some really unspectacular human mammals) says that “we” have the right to this piece of property? Give me an ever loving break! Complacency is at the heart of religious faith – to just blindly accept the many-times-over-revised writings of yesteryear as divine wisdom which must be obeyed for fear of its vivid descriptions of Hell, and for these same blind followers to give a collective shrug and say, “It is god’s will.” Nonsense! It’s human mammals too mesmerized by the idea of a purely fictional divine right to see past their own noses, and somehow are willing to kill and be killed to defend it.

Yes, I think you’ve hit the nail on the head again, Minds. But how to explain that to them? Yes, it’s tragic what people will kill other people for. But we’ve got to face the reality that we can’t just scream at them: “Stop being religious!”. They won’t do that, so some other way must be found. The main thing is to stop the killing, whatever it takes. Would you kill them because they are religious?
    😉

  7. Minds Erased’s avatar

No, I would not kill them, or anyone for that matter, because, quite frankly, as long as folks keep killing each other in the name of religion, then they certainly won’t need MY help. It’s true – you can’t just say “Stop being religious” because they would never listen. I’m not sure if there is any intelligent way to facilitate the collective mass awakening of these people – I am sure it happens in small pockets of the population. But, alas – evolution is slow – bullets are fast. Besides – have you ever heard of anyone waging war that was motivated by a LACK of religious faith? And before y’all start in the with Hitler argument, I’ll remind everyone right now that he was a god-fearing Catholic.

  8. Mardé’s avatar

I think there are secular people over there, but few and far between, as you say. However, the religious nuts rule the roost! I guess in the end I gotta agree with you, Minds….. Of course there is another thing, called power, the lust for it………..
