Books and Such

Perhaps I should mention the books I’m in the process of reading or have read recently. I just finished The Meaning of Life by Terry Eagleton, and before that the Irish novel The Gathering by Anne Enright which won the 2007 Man Booker Prize. Now I’m trying to simultaneously read The Private Life of the Brain by Susan Greenfield, The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins, and Cosmic Jackpot by Paul Davies. I’ve already read the latter — see here — so this will be a re-read. Also, I’m still dabbling in Roger Penrose’s The Road to Reality, a very heavy physics book for the “general reader”. Plus, there’s a bunch of stuff online on physics, cosmology, philosophy, and religion that I’m trying to keep up with. Incidentally, there’s a great put-down by Terry Eagleton of The God Delusion here.

My objective is to straddle science, philosophy and religion and see what kind of a mixture I might end up with, if any. 😆

Wow…I’am not quite in your reading category.Maybe you will tell us about one or more of them.

I’am just still with my novels !I have bought a few historical type mysteries before Xmas ( set in 18th century France). I also bought 2 books in English, including a novel called “Tales of the City” by Armistead Maupin. His stories are set in one of my fav cities,San Francisco.

    Have a nice day.

I read the Dawkins last year – you may have seen my comments on one of my pages. I agree with him re Darwin but I have little liking for him.
I have finished Fox in the Attic and am halfway through Wooden Shepherdess – particularly enjoying the latter. Hughes published the last at age 73. Incredible, I think.
I don’t read at anywhere the speed I used to, macular degeneration slows book reading to bedtime only. Fortunately I see fine for pc and driving. I too would be delving into cosmology and string theory.
    Enjoy, Aileni.

Well, Barbara, I should read more novels too. I have an obsession with this heavy stuff, much of it over my head. But I’ve the urge to know and figure out why I’m here. 😆

I think I agree with you completely, Aileni, on Dawkins but I still have to read his book. Sorry to hear about your macular degeneration. Sounds like we have similar interest re cosmology and string theory. Thanks for those tips on Hughes. Age 73? Wow, he’s young!
